4 1/2 stars.
A clandestine government organization called Invictus 'recruits' physically outstanding criminal juveniles and athletes for secret projects. Jackson Holt is one of their agents. He has very special, preternatural abilities. The heroine, Olivia Gant, is a professor of Ancient Studies at Our Lady of Fatima University, in Sacramento, California. Olivia was Jack's childhood sweetheart. Unfortunately, he abandoned her and she's still having a grudge against him. Almost 20 years later, they meet again to catch a sick religious serial killer. Jack needs her specialized help with the notes - Olivia is a Latin expert.
The book starts out in Southeast Africa where Jack is on a mission. We get a little sample of his 'qualities'...Jack is a hunter in search of human prey.
They call the villain DLK for Dead Language Killer because Latin is a dead language. The killer is taunting the authorities. He left Latin notes (his signature) after killing the victims, and he seems to be impatient with the behavioral unit's slow investigation. The murderer has a focus on Latin and an affinity for this time period.
To be able to catch the bad guys, Jack has to take different pills to enhance his physical capabilities. This can be dangerous at times.
[...]Jack's visions were careening out of control. Usually his visions channelled through the eyes of the man he hunted, but sometimes the victim or a third person provided the conduit. Whose head had he been inside in this latest vision? The killer? His victim? Or someone watching the killer? He didn't know if his overloaded brain circuits or the transposed sensory images caused the confusion. But he was certain of one thing - he'd seen a red-haired girl, not a brunette, with her attacker. The killer?[...]
Olivia:
[...]Whoever - whatever - was in the other room wasn't the Jack she knew. Didn't sound like him, didn't look like him. She let out a shudder and pulled the spread over her bare legs.[...]
The plot is excellent. I am so not into this paranormal stuff but this time it worked for me. Actually, it is a romantic suspense book with a slight paranormal touch. Lucky me, I didn't have to deal with werewolves or vampires! I am not a religious person but I "love" to read about such twisted and sick religious killers. That's just so riveting! The killer is driven by religious mania, and he believes that he is the holy avenger punishing sinners for their evil deeds. He uses ancient modes of execution, and he wants to make religious sacrifices.
I loved to read about the Latin notes, all those hints the killer left behind. And how the team tried to understand the villain's mind - to crawl under his skin. Wow, that was so captivating! Something else was truly fascinating. The author throws several bad guys at the reader. I couldn't focus on one single person, and I have to admit that I had some trouble to find out who did the evil deeds. Yes, I found out and I'm a bit proud of myself. To do that I had to use brains and my gut instinct. Very well done, indeed, Ms. Robertson! The tension and chemistry between Jack and Olivia was very good. I could feel their ambivalent feelings for each other, and they generated quite some heat.
I only have a minor complaint. I wanted more quality time and romance for H/h. There was just not enough time or room to fully develop their relationship.
Overall it was a very good read - totally thrilling and engrossing and it is very fast-paced! Keep it up, Ms. Robertson! I'm looking forward to reading your next installment "The Traitor"!

This book was gritty and sexy and full of twists. The characters are intriguing and HOT and the killer is twisted! I loved it
